Iré

Music Sample: Iré - Cuban son

On the island of Cuba, when luck, harmony, and good fortune are on your side, it is said that you are "iré." The origins of the word are in western Africa, and variations of it are found on other islands in the Caribbean.

IRÉ (ee-REH), based in San Francisco’s Mission District, uses a format that includes vocals, guitar, tres, bass, flute, bongó, tumbadora, claves, and maracas to perform son, a wonderfully tasteful style of dance music born in the eastern provinces of Cuba in the early 1900's.  It is this very music that has evolved in the last several decades into what many now call salsa.  The unique intimacy of the music lies in the lead singer’s ability to improvise lyrics.

While aiming to maintain and honor the traditions of son, we also look for our own unique interpretations of the music in our arrangements, made possible not only by the creativity and spirit of the group, but by a strong vocal lineup.  - From the Iré promo pack
